Nemesia Winter Care – Will Nemesia Grow In Winter

By: Mary H. Dyer, Credentialed Garden Writer

Is nemesia cold hardy? Sadly, for northern gardeners, theanswer is no, as this native of South Africa, which grows in USDA planthardiness zones 9 and 10, definitely isn’t cold-tolerant. Unless you have a greenhouse, the only way to grow nemesia in winter is to live in a warm, southern climate.

The good news is, if your climate is chilly during thewinter, you can enjoy this lovely plant during the warm weather months. Nemesiawinter care isn’t necessary or realistic because there is no protection thatcan see this tender plant through freezing a freezing winter. Read on to learnmore about nemesia and cold tolerance.

About Nemesia in Winter

Does Nemesia bloom in winter? Nemesiais generally grown as an annual. In the South, nemesia is planted in fall andwill bloom throughout the winter and well into spring as long as temperaturesaren’t too hot. Nemesia is a summer annual in cool northern climates, where itwill bloom from late spring to the first frost.

Temperatures of 70 F. (21 C.) during the day are ideal, withcooler temperatures during the night. However, growth slows when temperaturesdrop to 50 F. (10 C.).

Newer hybrids are an exception, however. Look for Nemesia capensis, Nemesia foetens, Nemesiacaerula, and Nemesia fruticans, which are slightly more frost tolerant and can tolerate temperatures as low as32 F. (0 C.). The newer Nemesia hybrid plants can also tolerate a little moreheat and will bloom longer in southernclimates.

I wish I could rate this company 10, this years plug plants have been outstanding, this is a brilliant company, I am 74 years old so I have been receiving plants from different plant companies for years, but I must say Brookside are the best. From the time you order them they keep you fully informed, you can pick the week when you want them delivered and when they arrive they are in perfect health. They are delivered the next day after being sent out. There is not a lot else I can say, but my begonia, bacopa, nemesia, lobelia, and my sufinias and tumberlinas are 10 star. Thanks Brookside
