Reproduction

For reproduction of horodovina, cuttings, layers or seeds are taken.

Seeds

Seeds should be sown in late October or early spring. Before sending them to the ground, you need to hold the seeds in the refrigerator for 7 months (stratification). Seeding is carried out to a depth of 3 cm. Germination begins from the root, the bud opens only the next year. A young sprout emerges from the ground. Experienced gardeners advise to accelerate germination:

  • keep seeds for three months at t 18 degrees;
  • keep the seeds for the next three months at t -3 - +5 degrees.

Green cuttings

The material is cut in late June or early July. The third part of the leaves is removed. The slices are placed in water with the addition of a special simulator to accelerate the emergence of roots (Kornevin, IMK). After the formation of roots, plant the cuttings in a greenhouse. Can be planted in the garden. Then you need to make a shelter from a plastic bottle, for example. The cap is regularly removed for airing and watering the sprout.

Layers

The method consists in bending overgrowth shoots to the ground. 10 cm grooves are pre-laid in the spring... Shoots are laid in grooves and covered with earth. Shoots will take root in the fall, after which they can be transplanted. You can do a transplant in the spring.

By dividing the bush

The bush divides both in the spring and in the fall. The plant is divided into several parts, taking into account that each of them has at least 3 buds of renewal.

Planting and leaving

Kalina Gordovina prefers neutral or weak soil acidity and good lighting. The plant does not like sand, peat and podzolic soils... It grows on infertile soils, but flowering and fruiting worsens.

A month before planting, phosphorus, potassium in the form of fertilizers are introduced into the soil, peat is added. In the spring or autumn is dug up landing recess 40 cm wide, 50 cm long and 40-50 cm deep... The distance between the bushes is at least 3 m.

The potting mix is being prepared:

  • organic soil (peat, humus);
  • urea (3 tbsp. l.);
  • wood ash (1 glass).

The root system must not be allowed to come into contact with ash.

Saplings, the roots of which are closed, are placed in the middle of the depression and covered with soil. The root collar should be no more than 5 cm in the soil... The exposed roots are spread on a pile of potting soil and covered. After planting, a hole is made near the plant and water is poured into it. Then the soil is mulched with peat or wood sawdust.

Watering

Young plants need to be shed 40 cm in the evening.... Adult bushes require watering during the growing season and during fruit formation.

It is necessary to loosen the soil in the near-trunk circle for oxygen access to the plant roots.

Top dressing

Like all trees and shrubs, Gordovina's viburnum needs feeding:

  • In the spring, before the leaves appear, urea is introduced (2 tbsp. l.);
  • Before flowering you need to add potassium sulfide (2 tbsp. l.);
  • In July a complex of mineral fertilizers is applied (60 g);
  • After two years, in the fall, before digging the soil, rotted manure, phosphorus, potassium are introduced. In dry weather, fertilizers are diluted with water.

All fertilizers are applied to the trunk circle.

Pruning

Pruning of the gordovina is done in the spring. This removes diseased and old branches. The rejuvenating procedure is performed after six years, that is, old branches are cut to the very root. You need to leave 7 pieces of branches for a fruit bush.

For the beauty of the bush, twigs that are more than 40 cm are pinched with your hands.

If the viburnum needs to be formed in the form of a tree, then the central vertical trunk remains, the remaining shoots are cut off. New shoots and shoots should be cut off every year. For branchiness and beauty of the crown the growth point must be pinched.

Diseases and pests

The shrub is very resistant to diseases and pests, but some still damage plants:

  • aphid;
  • scabula comma-shaped;
  • cap moth.

Insecticides, preferably with an adhesive, help fight pests. The shield can be destroyed with karbofos. To destroy aphids, a trichogram is added to the plant.

Bushes are affected by powdery mildew and spotting... Treatment with fungicides will help fight diseases. To prevent diseases, treatment with infusions of tobacco or garlic is carried out.

Conclusion

Kalina Gordovina is a plant that remains decorative despite the environment and lack of maintenance. The main decorative advantage is foliage.... The shrub is ideal for cities, for planting it on streets, courtyards, squares.

Moreover, it is known that the berries of the plant have healing properties, especially when combined with honey. Compotes, jelly are prepared from berries, they are dried.

Kalina "Gordovina": description and tips for growing

Every gardener loves to experiment on his site, come up with an interesting design, and plant new crops. Many summer residents have discovered a very beautiful shrub Viburnum "Gordovina". Description and tips for growing will help you understand why gardeners are so attracted to this shrub.

Kalina "Gordovina" performs well the function of an ornamental shrub both in urban plantings and in private farmsteads. His description is very impressive. The dense crown has a diameter of up to three meters, the branches are located close to each other, so the plant looks lush and beautiful. Its height can be five meters high. In one place, a tree can live up to fifty years.

Fresh shoots are gray in color. Old branches look like other trees - with small cracks in the bark.

The leaves of the viburnum are rather large - about 20 cm, have a sharp top with small notches along the edges, are attached to the shoots with thin, slightly fluffy petioles.

The outer part of the leaf is wrinkled, has a deep green color, the inner part is grayish. The leaves are very pleasant to the touch, like a soft fluffy fabric. Because of these features, viburnum received another name - felt.

The variety "Gordovina" contains plants with variegated leaves, which are even more appreciated for their decorative effect. Even in moments when the plant is not yet blooming, it looks very attractive, thanks to its unusual foliage.

And when flowers appear on the bush, it is impossible to take your eyes off it. In warm regions, the tree blooms in May, in the northern regions and the middle lane, the viburnum appears in all its glory in mid-June.

Spherical cream-colored inflorescences appear on the branches, each ball contains a large number of flowers with a diameter of about one and a half centimeters.

For a whole month, viburnum pleases those around with its beauty, this is how long flowering continues. In addition to the fact that the tree serves as a decoration for the site, flowers are also used for medical purposes.

After the buds fall, small oval fruits appear on the branches, for example, cranberries or blueberries. Like flowers, they do not crumble for a long time, and the tree acquires a new outfit for many days, changing the decoration of the garden.

The first ripening period is characterized by green berries, which at first are barely visible in the lush and dense foliage.

[su_box title = "Tip" style = "glass" box_color = "# FFDB00 ″ radius =" 5 ″]

But gradually the color changes, in August - pink, in early September - red, by the end of ripening - black, this is already October, and in warm regions all November.

So it comes as no surprise that gardeners have come to love the shrub for its decorative qualities. It is a decoration of the garden from early spring to late autumn.

Black berry is the main difference from the common viburnum, the berries of which are no less useful and beautiful, but have a bright red color. Care and planting for both species have a lot in common.

Very often, what is a huge plus for the southern regions can become a minus for the northern regions. The disadvantages of this magnificent shrub include the late ripening of the berries.

In the Far East at this time, frosts are already coming.

But, as gardeners note, a berry caught in a frost acquires an interesting taste with a slight bitterness, it can be used, its healing properties are not lost.

Another disadvantage that gardeners have learned to cope with is the uneven ripening of fruits on the brush, since the flowers bloom alternately.

The ideal soil for Gordovina viburnum is neutral or slightly acidic. Sandy, peaty and podzolic soils are not suitable for the plant.

On infertile soils, it will also grow, but you need to be prepared for the fact that flowering and fruiting will be impaired.

But Kalina needs good lighting, it should be placed in sunny places, or at least in those where the sun appears for half the day.

You can prepare the soil in the following way:

  • to organic soil, including peat and humus, you need to add three tablespoons of urea, one glass of wood ash
  • well-spread roots are placed in the recess, carefully covered with the composition, while the root collar should be deepened by no more than five centimeters
  • after the end of planting, a small depression is made near the plant, water is poured into it
  • mulch is prepared from sawdust and placed under the seedling.

Seedlings are watered in the evening, adult bushes need watering during the growing season and the formation of fruits. Loosening is required near the trunks, which will provide the necessary oxygen for the roots. Like all trees and shrubs, the Gordovina viburnum needs feeding, namely:

  • in the spring, while the leaves have not yet appeared, urea is added under the bush in the amount of two tablespoons
  • before flowering, two tablespoons of potassium sulphide are introduced
  • in July, the plant will need about 60 g of mineral fertilizers
  • in the fall, humus, phosphorus, potassium are used as top dressing of viburnum
  • after two years of life, in the fall, rotted manure, phosphorus, potassium are introduced into the soil. If the weather is dry, the fertilizer should be diluted with water.

The shrub is one of the resistant plants in relation to diseases and pests. But this does not mean that he does not need preventive treatment. It can be struck by aphids, comma-shaped scabbard, cap moth.

In the fight against the scabbard, karbofos helps, and they cope with aphids by planting trichogramma. Powdery mildew and spotting can affect viburnum. In these cases, the plants are treated with fungicides.

And for prevention, the bushes are treated with garlic and tobacco infusions.

You can increase the number of shrubs on your site with the help of seeds, cuttings and layering, dividing the bush.

  • Seeds. Seeds are sown in late autumn or early spring. Preparation takes a long time. Before placing them in the ground, they are kept in the refrigerator for seven months. Then the seeds are lowered into the ground to a depth of no more than three centimeters. The root will begin to form first. If planted in the fall, the sprout will appear in the spring. Those who are already familiar with the shrub and know all the rules of care and planting, know how to speed up the germination process. For this, for the first three months, the seeds are kept at a temperature of +18 degrees, and the remaining ones - from -3 to +5 degrees.
  • Cuttings. When propagated by cuttings, the material is harvested in late June or early July: one third of the cuttings are cleared of leaves, and the cut is placed in water. To speed up the emergence of roots, you can add a special stimulant - root. When the root appears, the stalk is moved to the greenhouse, but it can also be planted in the ground.
  • Layers... For reproduction by layering in the spring, grooves are dug out near the tree in advance, the shoots are bent to the ground and buried in the grooves. In the fall, they take root. And then they can be transplanted to a separate place. But this process can be postponed until spring.
  • Division of the bush. If the breeding method is chosen by dividing the bush, then this is done in spring or autumn. The plant must be divided so that each separated part has at least three renewal buds.

In the spring, you need to prune the viburnum. Sick and old branches are removed. After six years, all the old branches are cut off at the root, there are about 7-8 viable shoots for the development of the bush.

To make it beautiful, branches more than 40 cm long are pinched by hands. If you would like to see on the site not a bush with a rich crown, but a tall tree, then the trunk remains, and the shoots are cut off.

When harvesting, the brushes are cut with a pruner.

Kalina "Gordovina" is drought-resistant, therefore it is used to decorate squares, alleys and parks. On especially dry days, the bushes will not lose their attractiveness and will wait for rain. The plant also withstands smoke, dust and gas pollution.

It will become a wonderful decoration in the courtyards of multi-storey buildings, and will bring bright notes to the surrounding landscape.

It is readily used as a hedge; it is a beautiful and reliable protection from animals that want to enter the garden.

With its help, the slopes of areas with difficult terrain are strengthened. A powerful and branched root system is a great helper. She is able to hold the soil and prevent it from being washed out by groundwater.

From a fifteen-year-old bush, you can collect a bucket of berries. They can be consumed fresh, they make delicious compotes, juices, jellies, jam, marmalade. The berries can be dried, brewed into delicious tea, or simply drunk as a healthy decoction. By the way, birds love viburnum. And they, arriving for berries, at the same time destroy insects that harm the tree.

Obviously, those who choose this original shrub will not regret it. The shrub will be a wonderful decoration and will bear tasty and healthy fruits, rich in vitamin C and helping in the treatment and prevention of various diseases.
