I plant pumpkin seeds on the turf to provide warm early plantings

Often gardeners plant a pumpkin in the backyards of their plot, on compost heaps - the ground there is loose and warm. This is what a sweet beauty needs. But I want to share my experience in cultivating this crop. Pumpkin cannot be dived. Therefore, it is better to plant it directly into the ground. You can use peat pots, but I want to suggest a more economical way by cutting up pieces of turf for planting. The size of each piece is approximately 15 * 15 or 20 * 20 centimeters. Thickness. About 10 centimeters. I turn it over. If there are a lot of roots, and they are tightly woven, then I cut them crosswise from above with a knife, loosen the earth, make a hole in the middle with a knife, put two pumpkin seeds in it, sprinkle a handful of earth on top. I take the soil from the garden. I put a blank with seeds on the edge of any garden bed, dig a hole so that a piece of turf with seeds is below ground level. I cover everything with earth and level it. Be sure to water it with warm water. The grass will begin to rot and provide warmth to the young plant. I cover the landing site with a film. Pay attention to the neighboring plants, it is better that there are no zucchini among them. For planting, I try to choose a sunny place, protected from the wind. The pumpkin is a very thermophilic plant. After a few days, the seeds germinate. At about the four-leaf phase, I choose a stronger plant. I do not pull out the weak ones, but carefully cut them off with a knife so that the roots of the remaining one are not damaged.Frosts often occur at this time. This is dangerous for young shoots. I cut off the bottom of a plastic five-liter water bottle, turn it over and cover my plants with it, it turns out a mini-greenhouse. The seedlings are warm and protected from the wind. During the day, I remove the cap from the neck of the bottle, and at night I must screw it up. Then I grow the pumpkin, as with the usual method of planting. The roots of the pumpkin are located quite deep. Therefore, it is not very demanding on watering. This plant is able to extract water from the air and use it economically for its own needs. Even in dry summers I rarely water it. Only when ovaries appear. When the fruits grow a little, I stop watering. To get large fruits, I leave no more than three fruits on each plant, I remove the rest. I sprinkle the lashes at a distance of one, one and a half meters with earth, so the plant takes out additional roots. I put planks or straw under the fruits so that they do not rot on the ground. I cut the pumpkin for storage along with the stalk.

How to get rid of wheatgrass with a pumpkin

Wheatgrass and other friendly weeds growing on virgin or neglected areas are reluctant to leave their acquired territories. It is practically pointless to fight them by weeding, because wheatgrass is perfectly recovering from the small root left behind. Applying "chemistry" is also not the best option if gardening is planned. To free the area from weeds, primarily wheatgrass, you need to plant a pumpkin.

In May, when the warm weather comes and the ground warms up, at a distance of 1 meter from each other it is necessary to remove small strips of sod - future holes for planting pumpkins. Turn the removed sod with the roots up and leave it next to it. In the holes, measuring 30.40 cm in diameter, apply organic matter, mineral fertilizer, some ash and loosen the soil. Sow pumpkin seeds or plant seedlings there.

The first time, while the pumpkin sprouts are still small, you will have to mow the grown grass once. It can be left in the same place on the site and left as mulch. It will delay the re-growth of weeds to some extent.

When the pumpkins grow, they drown out the growth of weeds with their leaves and deprive them of sunlight. Some of them will die, some will weaken by the fall.

After harvesting the pumpkin, the site will look very different. Remove the tops from pumpkin plants in a compost heap, and turn the soil layer upside down and leave until spring. In the next gardening season, the new plot will be almost ready for use. You just need to dig it up or cultivate it. If it is not possible to dig up, then sow siderates there so as not to give an opportunity for weeds to colonize again.

Advice. Sow long-stemmed pumpkin varieties to make better use of the green mass of the plants. Bush pumpkins are compact and will not give the desired effect.

In areas where wheatgrass grows, the soil is acidic. Such soils require additional liming and the introduction of ash. It will also help control wheatgrass.

A properly selected area for growing pumpkin can be considered one that meets the following requirements:

  • has sufficient sunlight necessary for plant photosynthesis and developmental phases
  • provides 12 hours of daylight hours for optimal crop maturation
the slope of the ground surface prevents the accumulation of excess rain moisture and possible waterlogging
  • The location allows you to choose the direction of the ridges and rows in such a way that the heat accumulated during the day does not have time to be completely consumed during the nighttime cold snap.

If possible, pumpkin gardeners use compost heaps. They keep soil warmth well, they contain the necessary supply of nutrients for plants in the initial period of growth.

Transplanting seedlings into open ground and care

The planting material should be no more than 30 days, this is the ideal period for changing the place of growth. With a later movement, the pumpkin may take root worse and start to hurt. The air temperature at the time of planting should be at least 17-18 ° C, especially for thermophilic varieties. A bed in a well-lit area of the garden is prepared in advance, dug up, fertilizers are applied, for example, a mixture of humus, compost. The best precursors to pumpkin are:

  • potatoes
  • carrot
  • onion
  • corn
  • cabbage.

Before planting seedlings, the ground is well filled with warm water. Pumpkin sprouts are immersed a little deeper than they were in pots, watered abundantly for better contact with the ground. Dusting to the level of the cotyledon leaves contributes to the formation of a stronger and more powerful root system.

After the water has been absorbed, the top is covered with dry earth, a mulching material, so that a hard crust does not form on the surface.

Young pumpkins should be protected from rotting due to soil moisture. For this, a small elevation is built from several stones and a wide board placed on them, the pumpkin is laid on top. Good soil aeration can be achieved through regular loosening, during which weeds are removed.

Advice. Pumpkin requires timely feeding during the period of growth of the first leaves and after the appearance of the ovary. Chicken manure diluted with water with a ratio of 1:20 is suitable, diluted ammonium nitrate with an amount not exceeding a matchbox of 10-12 liters.

How to plant a pumpkin in open ground with seeds

To properly plant pumpkin seeds in the ground, you need to decide on a plant layout suitable for a particular variety and follow simple rules. Once the flaps of the pumpkin seeds have opened, they are ready for planting.

Pumpkin planting scheme in the open field

The planting layout depends on the pumpkin variety. For long-growing varieties, a distance of about 200x150 cm is provided between the plants.Plants of bush pumpkin are more compact, therefore they are planted according to the scheme of 90x90 cm or 130x130 cm.

How to plant a pumpkin correctly

If it was not possible to fertilize the soil with organic matter before winter, on the day of planting, a mixture of humus and wood ash is laid in the hole.

On the eve of planting seeds, dig holes and spill them well. The depth depends on the type of soil - on light soils it is 8–10 cm, on dense soils it is enough to deepen the seeds by 4–5 cm.

When the water is absorbed, 3-4 seeds are placed in each groove, sprouts down.

After planting the seeds, the planting site is mulched with peat or humus and covered with a transparent film. This is especially true for the cold northern regions.

When the first shoots appear, the highest quality plant must be left in each hole.

To date, there are many videos of author's methods of planting pumpkin seeds in open ground, but the well-proven classic procedure minimizes the risk of unpleasant surprises in growing this vegetable.

Care after landing

Further care for the pumpkin implies regular watering, loosening, weeding, feeding and disease prevention. To increase the yield, the main stem of plants of long-leaved varieties is pinched, and extra female flowers are removed from bush ones.

Planting a pumpkin in 2019

When exactly to plant pumpkin seeds in 2019 depends on the warming up of the soil. In each regional area, the weather conditions are different. Therefore, it is impossible to give exact numbers for planting a pumpkin in 2018. For example, in the central part of Russia, the pumpkin planting period is considered the end of May - the beginning of June. At this time, spring frosts usually end, and nothing threatens the future harvest. In warmer regions, pumpkin seeds are planted in early May, and in colder regions in mid-June.

Before planting a pumpkin for seedlings, it is important to follow the broadcasting of weather forecasters. This will help you stay on top of the weather conditions for the next few weeks. Planting the pumpkin can be postponed if necessary.
