How to grow early vegetables in your garden

Early sowing - early harvest

Every year I try to get my first vegetables as early as possible in the spring. I start preparing for the season in the fall. I choose a ridge in a high place of the site, which will be well lit all day. After harvesting, a lot of plant residues remain in the garden, and I use them as biofuel on this ridge. I dig a trench there to a depth of 30-40 cm and put the stems of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, carrot tops, beets into it. The stems of flowers also go there: phlox, peonies and almost any organic material from the site. You can use the leaves of fruit trees, ornamental trees and shrubs.

It is necessary to observe only one important condition: among the residues laid in the garden there should be no plants damaged by pests and sick. You cannot put plants with roots in the ridge. Some of them are so tenacious that they will easily sprout and clog the garden. This happens with kupena, highlander, phlox, stonecrop and other flower crops. On the plant residues laid in the trench, I pour the earth with a layer of 20 cm, then I add humus or compost there, I add superphosphate. Since autumn, I install it on the ridge of the arc. In this case, it is easy to find it under the snow in the spring.

If the spring is early, then by mid-April here, on the Karelian Isthmus, the snow has already melted. And after a snowy winter, it is necessary in the first half of April to remove the snow from the ridge and cover it with a film. As soon as the soil thaws with a layer of a few centimeters, I sprinkle ash on the ridge, add a little complete mineral fertilizer, loosen it - and you can sow.

I sow vegetables by alternating rows of fast and slow growing vegetables. For example, alternating parsley with radish, salad with Peking and Chinese cabbage. You can sow leafy celery, watercress, chervil, arugula. I sow dill scattered throughout the garden.

If the vegetables were sown in mid-April, then by mid-May they are already ready for harvesting: radishes, Chinese cabbage, watercress, dill. Slow growing crops - parsley, celery, lettuce remain on the ridge, I weed them, give them additional fertilizing, loosen the soil, and they grow on this ridge all summer. I plant the salad on other beds.

Since autumn, on the same ridge, I plant onion sets very tightly - in a bridge way. I pour 10 cm of earth on top. On a warm ridge, it takes root well and does not shoot. By mid-May, a feather 30-40 cm high grows under the film. I grow garlic here on the greens - I plant the cloves very densely in the fall. In the spring, I pull out all the plants completely. I tried to cut the greens, but the garlic grows poorly after cutting. I plant a multi-tiered onion here, it grows powerful greens very quickly.

For this method of growing early vegetables, it is important to find the right varieties. I use radishes at different ripening times so that the harvest arrives gradually. It is desirable that the root crop has a small leaf rosette, then it will not shade slowly growing crops. Radish Anabel F1 turned out to be above all praise last season: a very small rosette of vertically arranged leaves and an excellent large root crop were formed.

If the greens need to be transported to the city, then from collard greens I prefer Chinese cabbage - it has denser leaves, it tolerates transportation better, does not wrinkle. If you get a large harvest, I use it not only in salad, but also in cabbage soup, you can add it to sorrel cabbage soup to reduce acidity. Here are the varieties of fruitful Chinese cabbage: Lebedushka, Pava, Alyonushka, Susman. After harvesting early vegetables, part of the garden is freed up, and therefore, after fertilizing it, I plant seedlings of leeks, cabbage, beets on this area, and sow carrots. Or you can sow green crops again: arugula, Chinese cabbage and Chinese cabbage, watercress, dill, lettuce or head lettuce.

I want to draw the attention of novice gardeners to the fact that green crops require a large amount of nutrients. Therefore, before each re-sowing, it is necessary to add additional fertilizers: compost, humus or complex fertilizer at the rate.

Many gardeners sometimes refuse to plant vegetables on their hacienda. They say that there are a lot of troubles with the garden, it is easier to buy vegetables than to worry about the beds all summer - to weed, loosen, water.

But how pleasant it is to eat your own vegetables, just picked from the garden, fragrant, fresh. You are really sure of the quality of your own crop - that you did not spray or water this food with anything harmful.

And worries about the beds can be reduced in order, if you think about what and how you will plant. Such easy-care vegetable garden suitable for both novice gardeners and experienced gardeners who are bored with fussing in the garden, or simply do not have enough time for it. In addition, children can be involved in caring for such unpretentious beds. Just think - gardening can become an interesting family hobby. To do this, you need to take care that the routine is reduced to nothing.

Fire red beans are the perfect plant for those looking to offer gardening as a hobby for their child.

This plant looks spectacular - bright orange flowers and dense foliage, purple seeds, with a bright pattern.

Beans braid the supports in record time and can be used not only in the garden, but also anywhere in your garden where walls need to be decorated.

The simplest and most mobile support for beans is a bundle of twine tied at one end to a brick, and at the other end a piece of rope is attached to the support.

Choosing vegetables for a light garden

What kind of vegetables are so unpretentious that a child can cope with caring for them?

First of all it is leafy vegetables - a variety of salads, spinach, sorrel, chard. Of course, spicy herbs - dill, parsley, garlic, garlic, various onions, basil, marjoram.

Unpretentious also radish and radish, zucchini, zucchini and beans.

Agree, a good set for a small vegetable garden that will deliver greens to your table all summer. These are live vitamins that must be added to salads and soups. And you can grow all this easily without many hours of painstaking work.

Romaine lettuce grows more slowly than, for example, cabbage salad.

But he does not throw out flower arrows soon, therefore, it is suitable for food until autumn.

Curly lettuce looks impressive and unpretentious.

It will grow over and over again if you pick off the leaves from the plants only at the edges, without touching the core.

Many varieties of spinach are also suitable for a “light vegetable garden”.

Young spinach is best suited for salads, so it is advisable to plant plants more closely with a smaller gap and often pick off young leaves.

Mangold is probably the unpretentious champion. In the spring, it is sown directly into the soil, into fertile moist soil.

Chard is also very effective - red or yellow petioles and dark green leaves.

Zucchini seedlings can only be planted when there is a threat of frost. Don't plant a lot of plants - just two can provide fruit for a family of three.

The photo shows a spherical zucchini, also called "rondini".

May radish grows very quickly, the main thing for it is that the soil remains moist. Entrust watering to your children.

This root vegetable grows very tender and juicy, has a characteristic radish smell. Due to its rapid growth, this radish is also cultivated in the fall.

Garden beds - easy and without routine

Our summer cottage motto - down with routine!

What upsets you the most about taking care of your garden? Most likely weeding. Or loosening the earth? Or hilling and forming beds? Here are our tips for your unpretentious garden:

You will need to think about an unpretentious garden in the fall, or rather even in the second half of summer. To prepare the soil, green manure plants are first planted in the desired areas. As siderates are used: oats, vetch, barley, rapeseed, lupine, peas, sweet clover, clover, buckwheat. In addition to further enriching the soil with nutrients, these plants grow so harmoniously that they do not allow weeds to develop in the selected area. Adult plants that have gained maximum green mass are mowed. Then they are dried (just leave the cut grass in place). After that, they dig up the garden bed, introducing green fertilizer inside. This completes the work with the garden until spring.

In the spring, the bed is loosened with a pitchfork or a cultivator. Then they are leveled with a pitchfork.

To get rid of the worries associated with sowing vegetables as much as possible, you can choose one of the most convenient options: purchase seeds already located at the right distance on the sowing belt. The sowing tape will allow you to involve your children in planting the garden - and this stage of gardening is very interesting and exciting. This method is convenient because in the future you will not have to waste time on thinning out the grown plants. In addition, you can show imagination and lay out various patterns and ornaments with the help of such ribbons. Experiment, turn the cultivation of a garden into real creativity - only then caring for it will be easy, not at all burdensome.

If you want to get the harvest as quickly as possible, then you can buy ready-made seedlings. Often these plants are sold in such packaging, which is easy enough to dig in and bury into the ground. An hour of your time - and the green bed is ready.

It is imperative to mulch between the rows of planted (or grown from seeds) vegetables. Without this, your garden will not be easy to maintain - after all, weekly weeding will be required, which usually takes more than one hour. Mulch prevents weeds from invading your garden beds. In addition, it retains moisture and keeps the soil loose - much less watering and loosening of such beds will be needed. The simplest mulch is made from mowed lawn grass or coarsely chopped garden waste. You can also buy special materials for mulching - sawdust, film and others.

How to grow early vegetables in the country

Have you ever had a chance to harvest fresh vegetables as soon as the snow melts? And not in a greenhouse, but right in the garden? Early vegetables in home gardens - not many can boast of this. Although, in fact, everything is quite simple: you just need to sow mustard leaves and watercress. Perhaps these are the most unpretentious, cold-hardy and early maturing crops. So we will tell you how to grow early vegetables in the country.

So, the early vegetables on your site should be watercress and mustard.

What is watercress, which is also called peppercorn, horseradish and garden watercress. They appreciate it, first of all, for its early maturity (ready for cutting within 15-20 days after germination), piquant taste and aroma. In addition, young stem leaves and rosette leaves are rich in ascorbic acid, carotene, rutin, vitamin B groups, mineral salts, iron and phosphorus. Watercress - the benefits of which are undeniable, are included in the diet for high blood pressure, to increase appetite and improve bowel function.

This is an annual plant, on a short day it forms a rosette of basal petiolate pinnately dissected leaves, and with a long one - leafy, branched, up to a meter high shoot. The flowers are small, white. The fruit is a pod.

How to grow early vegetables in your garden? In open ground, watercress is sown as early as possible: under the film - in early April, without it - at the end of this month. Sowing is resumed in mid-August. Watercress is very unpretentious - it does not grow well on excessively fertilized soil, but it loves well-lit areas and regular watering.
Watercress is sown in a row according to the scheme 3-5 x 10-15 cm, not too deep. It is also possible with double-line ribbons with the distance between the lines of 20 cm, and between the ribbons - 50 cm. Seed consumption - 1.5-2 g per 1 sq. M. The shoots that appear on days 2-4 are thinned out, leaving 8-10 cm between the plants. Then the watercress rosette turns out to be large, of better quality.

The watercress is removed as needed. When the stem begins to grow in the plants, they are all pulled out. The harvest of early vegetables grown in the country is placed in a plastic bag or shallow food container, lightly sprinkled with water so that the greens do not fade, and stored in the refrigerator for a week and a half.

Salad mustard is not inferior in its useful properties to watercress. Its leaves are eaten, which are cut off 25-28 days after sowing. Lettuce or mustard mustard is the most cold-resistant vegetable: it germinates even at a temperature of plus 1-3 °, and the seedlings tolerate even slight frosts. Therefore, it can be sown very early: under the film in March-April, in open ground - from the first ten days of April, repeating sowing every 5-10 days, or at the end of August. In summer, salad mustard quickly throws out the stem and is of little use for food.

The mustard is sown in rows according to the scheme 5 x 5 or 10 x 10 cm to a depth of 0.5-1 cm.The planting is thinned so that there is 8-10 cm between the plants.Care is simple - the same as for watercress, but in in contrast, mustard is responsive to soil fertility and fertilization.

These early vegetables can be grown not only in the country. How to grow watercress on the windowsill at home or the same mustard salad?

We take shallow boxes, fill them with a layer of soil (5-7 cm) or line them with a damp soft cloth or paper. We sow seeds in a dense scatter: watercress - at the rate of 15-20 g per sq. M, mustard - 30 g per sq. M. We cover the boxes with glass or film and keep them until germination in a dark place, and then move them to the windowsill or to the loggia. We moisten the soil or fabric regularly.

After a week and a half, it will already be possible to pull out or cut off the grown watercress plants with two or three real leaves. Salad mustard is usually ready a week later. It is cut with scissors when the leaves grow 5-8 cm.

Watercress and mustard leaves are eaten in the form of salads or a side dish for fish and meat dishes, as well as with cheese. Try it - it's tasty and healthy.

We told you how to grow early vegetables in the country and get fresh herbs in April. Take a note.
